Lazarus of Bulgaria

Holy New Martyr Lazarus the Shepherd of Bulgaria, martyred near Pergamon.

Lazarus was a Bulgarian shepherd who came to work in Asia Minor near Pergamon. Falsely accused by a Turkish woman, he was pressed to accept Islam and refused, confessing Christ under torture.

He was put to death in 1802 and is honoured by the Bulgarian and Greek Churches alike.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Lazarus of Bulgaria is commemorated on April 23. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 6 of the civil calendar.
