Gerasimos of Cephalonia (Repose)

Venerable Gerasimos the New Ascetic, protector of Cephalonia, remembered on the day of his repose.

Saint Gerasimos was born in the Peloponnese in the sixteenth century, became a monk on Mount Athos and later settled on Cephalonia, where he founded a convent at Omala and served the people in famine and sickness. He reposed on the fifteenth of August 1579.

His relics remain incorrupt, and the island keeps his feast both on this day and on the twentieth of October.

On the New Calendar, Gerasimos of Cephalonia (Repose) is commemorated on August 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 29 of the civil calendar.
