Joseph the Hesychast

Venerable Joseph the Hesychast, the Cave-Dweller of Mount Athos.

Saint Joseph was born on the island of Paros and went to Mount Athos as a young man, where he lived in caves and huts of extreme austerity, devoting himself to the Jesus Prayer. His disciples went on to renew several Athonite monasteries and to found communities across the world.

He reposed on the feast of the Dormition in 1959 and was numbered among the saints in 2020.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Joseph the Hesychast is commemorated on August 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 29 of the civil calendar.
