  Translation of Mandylion

  Great Feast, Μανδήλιο

  This feast commemorates the translation of the Holy Mandylion, the Icon of Christ Not-Made-by-Hands, from Edessa to Constantinople in the tenth century. According to tradition, King Abgar of Edessa, suffering from illness, sent to the Lord asking for healing, and received a cloth upon which the face of Christ had been imprinted without human hands; through it he was healed and believed.

• Diomedes the Physician

  Martyr, Διομήδης

  Saint Diomedes was a physician from Tarsus in Cilicia who healed both bodies and souls, bringing many to Christ. He settled in Nicaea, where he was arrested under Diocletian and died on the way to trial.

• Stamatios of Volos

  Martyr, Σταμάτιος

  Saint Stamatios was a young man from the region of Volos who went to Constantinople to protest the oppression of his village by Ottoman officials. Arrested and urged to convert, he confessed Christ steadfastly and was beheaded in 1680.

• Apostolos the New

  Martyr, Απόστολος ο Νέος

  Saint Apostolos was born in the village of Agios Lavrentios on Mount Pelion and worked in Constantinople. Slandered before the authorities, he refused to deny Christ and was beheaded in the seventeenth century.

• Joseph the Hesychast

  Venerable, Ιωσήφ ο Ησυχαστής

  Saint Joseph was born on the island of Paros and went to Mount Athos as a young man, where he lived in caves and huts of extreme austerity, devoting himself to the Jesus Prayer. His disciples went on to renew several Athonite monasteries and to found communities across the world.

• Gerasimos of Cephalonia (Repose)

  Venerable, Γεράσιμος Κεφαλληνίας

  Saint Gerasimos was born in the Peloponnese in the sixteenth century, became a monk on Mount Athos and later settled on Cephalonia, where he founded a convent at Omala and served the people in famine and sickness. He reposed on the fifteenth of August 1579.
