John Scholastikos

St. John III Scholastikos, Patriarch of Constantinople, compiler of the canons.

St. John was born near Antioch and trained as a lawyer before becoming a priest. He compiled an early collection of the canons of the Church and was raised to the patriarchal throne of Constantinople in the sixth century.

He governed the Church for twelve years and reposed in peace.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, John Scholastikos is commemorated on February 21. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 6 (a day earlier in leap years) of the civil calendar.
