Zacharias of Jerusalem

St. Zacharias, Patriarch of Jerusalem, who was led captive to Persia.

St. Zacharias was Patriarch of Jerusalem when the Persians captured the city in 614. He was taken into captivity together with the Precious Cross and many of the faithful, and consoled his flock through years of exile.

He returned to Jerusalem with the Cross after the victory of the Emperor Heraclius and reposed in peace.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Zacharias of Jerusalem is commemorated on February 21. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 6 (a day earlier in leap years) of the civil calendar.
