John Vladimir of Serbia

Holy King John Vladimir of Serbia, wonderworker, beheaded by treachery.

John Vladimir ruled the Serbian land of Zeta (Duklja) at the turn of the eleventh century and was known for his piety and justice. Captured by Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria, he married the Tsar's daughter Kosara and was restored to his throne.

He was treacherously beheaded in 1016 by Samuel's successor. His relics are venerated near Elbasan in Albania and he is honored throughout the Balkans.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, John Vladimir of Serbia is commemorated on May 22. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 4 of the civil calendar.
