Zacharias of Prousa

Hieromartyr Zacharias the New of Prousa, a priest beheaded for returning to Christ.

Zacharias was a priest of Prousa in Asia Minor who, in a moment of weakness, had embraced Islam. Repenting, he confessed his return to Christ before the judge and refused every inducement to recant.

He was beheaded in 1802.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Zacharias of Prousa is commemorated on May 22. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 4 of the civil calendar.
