Joseph of Thessaloniki

St. Joseph the Confessor, Archbishop of Thessaloniki, brother of St. Theodore the Studite.

St. Joseph was the brother of St. Theodore the Studite and became Archbishop of Thessaloniki in the early ninth century. He suffered exile and imprisonment for his defense of the holy icons and for opposing the unlawful marriage of the emperor.

He is also remembered as a hymnographer and reposed as a confessor.

On the New Calendar, Joseph of Thessaloniki is commemorated on July 14. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 27 of the civil calendar.
