Stephen of Makhrishche

Venerable Stephen, abbot of Makhrishche, friend of St. Sergius of Radonezh.

St. Stephen was a monk of the Kiev Caves who moved north and founded a monastery at Makhrishche in the fourteenth century. He was a friend of St. Sergius of Radonezh and shared his labors in reviving monastic life.

He reposed in peace in 1406.

On the New Calendar, Stephen of Makhrishche is commemorated on July 14. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 27 of the civil calendar.
