Leonides of Athens

Hieromartyr Leonides, Bishop of Athens, drowned at Corinth with the holy women who followed him.

Leonides was Bishop of Athens in the third century. During the persecution of Decius he was arrested and taken to Corinth, where he was tried with seven Christian women who had been converted by his preaching.

After torture they were all cast into the sea, tradition relating that Leonides went to his death singing psalms. His memory is kept on this day in Athens, and on the following day with his companions of Corinth.

On the New Calendar, Leonides of Athens is commemorated on April 15. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 28 of the civil calendar.
