Makarios of Kalyazin

Venerable Makarios, abbot of Kalyazin, wonderworker.

St. Makarios was born of a noble family near Tver in the fifteenth century and, after the death of his wife, became a monk. Seeking solitude, he settled in a forest by the Volga, where disciples gathered and the monastery of Kalyazin grew up around him.

He was known for his humility, working with his own hands and wearing patched clothing, and for the miracles at his tomb after his repose in 1483. His memory is kept on March 17.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Makarios of Kalyazin is commemorated on March 17. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 30 of the civil calendar.
