Saint Patrick, Bishop of Armagh, enlightener of Ireland.
St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the late fourth century and as a youth was carried off by raiders to Ireland, where he tended sheep as a slave and learned to pray. After escaping and being ordained, he returned to Ireland as a bishop and spent the rest of his life preaching the Gospel, baptizing kings and people, and founding churches and monasteries.
His own short Confession survives, full of humility and gratitude. He reposed in the fifth century and is honored as the apostle of Ireland. His memory is kept on March 17.
