Maximos the Greek

Venerable Maximos the Greek, Athonite scholar and confessor in Russia.

St. Maximos the Greek was born in Arta in 1470, studied in Italy, and became a monk at Vatopedi on Mount Athos. Sent to Moscow to translate sacred books, he was falsely accused, condemned, and kept in confinement for many years, which he bore with patience.

He reposed in 1556 at the Holy Trinity Lavra. He is commemorated on January 21.

On the New Calendar, Maximos the Greek is commemorated on January 21. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 3 of the civil calendar.
