  Maximos the Confessor

  Hierarch, Μάξιμος

  St. Maximos the Confessor was a monk and theologian of the seventh century. Leaving high office in Constantinople for the monastic life, he became the great champion of the truth that Christ, being true God and true man, possesses both a divine and a human will, standing almost alone against the Monothelite heresy supported by emperor and patriarch.

• Neophytos the Martyr

  Martyr, Νεόφυτος

  St. Neophytos was born in Nicaea and from childhood was distinguished by prayer and wonders; tradition relates that at ten he lived in a cave on Mount Olympus. In the persecution of Diocletian, at the age of fifteen, he confessed Christ before the governor, was tortured, and was pierced with a spear.

• Agnes of Rome

  Holy Woman, Αγνή

  St. Agnes was a young girl of Rome who, refusing marriage for love of Christ, was denounced as a Christian in the persecution of the early fourth century. Tradition relates that she was sent to a brothel and preserved unharmed by God before being put to death by the sword at the age of about thirteen.

• Maximos the Greek

  Venerable, Μάξιμος ο Γραικός

  St. Maximos the Greek was born in Arta in 1470, studied in Italy, and became a monk at Vatopedi on Mount Athos. Sent to Moscow to translate sacred books, he was falsely accused, condemned, and kept in confinement for many years, which he bore with patience.

• Eugenios of Trebizond and those with him

  Martyr, Ευγένιος Τραπεζούντος

  Sts. Eugenios, Candidus, Valerian and Aquila were Christians of Trebizond in the persecution of Diocletian. Tradition relates that Eugenios overthrew the idol of Mithras on the mountain above the city; the four were arrested, tortured, and beheaded.

• Patroklos the Martyr

  Martyr, Πάτροκλος

  St. Patroklos was a wealthy Christian of Troyes in Gaul who devoted his goods to the poor. In the persecution of the third century he confessed Christ before the governor and was beheaded.

• Zosimas of Syracuse

  Hierarch, Ζώσιμος Συρακουσών

  St. Zosimas was given by his parents to a monastery in Sicily as a child and grew up in the monastic life, later becoming abbot. In the seventh century he was made Bishop of Syracuse, where he cared for the poor and reposed in peace.
