Venerable Moses the Ethiopian, desert father.
St. Moses the Ethiopian was in his youth a slave and then the leader of a band of robbers in Egypt, feared for his strength and violence. Coming to himself, he repented and entered the monastic life in the desert of Sketis, where through long struggle with his former passions he attained deep humility and gentleness, and was found worthy of the priesthood.
He was killed when barbarians attacked the monastery, having refused to lift a weapon in his own defense. A powerful witness that no sinner is beyond repentance, he is commemorated on August 28.
