Nathanael the Venerable

Venerable Nathanael of Nitria, who did not leave his cell for many years.

Venerable Nathanael was a monk of Nitria in Egypt in the fourth century. Tradition relates that after being tempted to leave his cell he resolved never to step across its threshold, and kept this rule for nearly forty years.

He reposed in peace.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Nathanael the Venerable is commemorated on November 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 10 of the civil calendar.
