Pinouphrios the Venerable

Venerable Pinouphrios of Egypt, the abbot who fled honour to live as an unknown novice.

Saint Pinouphrios was abbot of a large monastery near Panephysis in Egypt in the fourth century. Fleeing the honour shown him, he twice left secretly, once to serve as an unknown novice in a monastery at Tabenna and once to Palestine, until he was recognized and brought back.

Saint John Cassian records his teaching on humility and renunciation. He reposed in peace.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Pinouphrios the Venerable is commemorated on November 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 10 of the civil calendar.
