Venerable Gregory of Sinai, hesychast father and teacher of the prayer of the heart.

Gregory was born in Asia Minor in the thirteenth century, was taken captive by the Turks, and after his ransom became a monk on Sinai, then in Crete, and finally on Mount Athos. There he taught the practice of inner stillness and the Jesus Prayer, gathering many disciples.
Driven from Athos by Turkish raids, he settled at Paroria on the Bulgarian border, where his community became a fountain of hesychasm for the Slavic lands. He reposed in the fourteenth century.

Saint Gregory was born in Asia Minor in the thirteenth century and became a monk on Mount Sinai, later settling on Mount Athos, where he taught the practice of inner prayer to many disciples. Because of Turkish raids he withdrew to Paroria in Bulgaria, where he founded a monastery.
His writings on watchfulness and prayer are included in the Philokalia. He reposed in 1346.
