Pharmuthios the Anchorite

Venerable Pharmuthios, anchorite of Egypt, who fed Saint John of the Well.

Pharmuthios lived as an anchorite in the Egyptian desert in the fourth century. Tradition relates that he was the elder who brought bread, miraculously supplied, to the hermit John who lived in a dry well.

He reposed in peace in the desert.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Pharmuthios the Anchorite is commemorated on April 11. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 24 of the civil calendar.
