Pior the Venerable

Venerable Pior of Egypt, a desert father and disciple of Saint Anthony.

Abba Pior was an Egyptian ascetic of the fourth century who left his family as a young man and became a disciple of Saint Anthony the Great. He lived in Scetis, and his sayings and his remarkable detachment from his relatives are recorded in the histories of the desert fathers.

On the New Calendar, Pior the Venerable is commemorated on June 17. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 30 of the civil calendar.
