Holy Martyr Polycarp of Alexandria, who rebuked the persecutor and was put to death.
Polycarp was a Christian of Alexandria who, seeing the blood of the martyrs shed in his city under the emperor Maximian, openly denounced the persecution. He was seized, tortured, and executed for his boldness.
He is not to be confused with the great hieromartyr Polycarp of Smyrna, commemorated in February.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Polycarp of Alexandria is commemorated on April 2. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 15 of the civil calendar.
