Sabbatius of Solovki

Venerable Sabbatius, wonderworker of Solovki, first hermit of the White Sea island.

St. Sabbatius was a monk of the Kirillov monastery and of Valaam who, seeking greater solitude, went with the monk Herman to the uninhabited island of Solovki in the White Sea in 1429. He lived there in prayer for several years and reposed on the mainland in 1435, and his disciples afterward founded the great Solovki monastery.

He is commemorated on September 27.

On the New Calendar, Sabbatius of Solovki is commemorated on September 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 10 of the civil calendar.
