Theodora of Sihla

Venerable Theodora of Sihla, hermitess of the Carpathian mountains.

Saint Theodora was born in Moldavia in the seventeenth century and, after her marriage was dissolved by agreement, became a nun. She lived for many years as a hermitess in a cave near the Sihla skete, enduring cold and hunger in prayer.

Tradition relates that birds brought her food in her last years; she is one of the most beloved women saints of Romania.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Theodora of Sihla is commemorated on August 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 20 of the civil calendar.
