  Porphyrios

  Hierarch, Πορφύριος

  St. Porphyrios was Bishop of Gaza at the turn of the fifth century. Born in Thessalonica, he lived as an ascetic in Egypt and the Holy Land before being called, against his desire, to the episcopate of Gaza, a city then still devoted to idols.

• Photini the Samaritan Woman

  Holy Woman, Φωτεινή η Σαμαρείτις

  St. Photini is the Samaritan woman of the Gospel of John who met Christ at Jacob's well and, having received from Him the living water, brought her whole city to believe in Him. After Pentecost she preached the Gospel in many lands together with her sons and sisters.

  St. Photini's five sisters, Anatole, Photo, Photis, Paraskevi and Kyriaki, and her sons Victor, called Photinos, and Joses, shared her missionary labours and her sufferings in Rome under Nero. The duke Sebastian, converted through Victor, was martyred with them.

  Martyr, Ιωάννης ο Κάλφας

  St. John was born in Galata in Constantinople and worked as a skilled cabinetmaker in the Sultan's palace and for other Turkish officials. When he spoke openly about the Christian faith to a young Muslim he had taken on as apprentice, he was denounced and pressed to embrace Islam.

• Theokletos the Martyr

  Martyr, Θεόκλητος

  Theokletos was a sorcerer who was sent to poison St. Photini and her companions in Rome. Seeing that the poison did them no harm, he came to believe in Christ and was baptised.

• Sebastian of Poshekhonye

  Venerable, Σεβαστιανός του Ποσεσόνε

  St. Sebastian founded a monastery of the Transfiguration near the river Sokhota in the Yaroslavl region, where the monks supported themselves by the labour of their hands. He was known for his humility and ascetic life.
