  Sisoes the Great

  Venerable, Σισώης

  St. Sisoes the Great was one of the renowned desert fathers of Egypt, living in the fourth and fifth centuries. After years in Sketis he withdrew to the mountain where St. Anthony the Great had lived, and there spent long decades in solitude, prayer, and profound humility, receiving those who came for a word of salvation.

  St. Lucia was a virgin from Campania in Italy who was taken captive and brought before the vicar Rixos. Tradition relates that he was so moved by her faith and austere life that he himself became a Christian.

  St. Asteios was Bishop of Dyrrachium (Durres) in the reign of Trajan. Tradition relates that he was smeared with honey and hung in the sun to be tormented by insects for refusing to sacrifice to idols.

  Sts. Philemon, Archippus and Onesimus are known from the Epistle of the Apostle Paul to Philemon. Philemon was a Christian of Colossae, Archippus a fellow-worker, and Onesimus the runaway slave whom Paul sent back as a brother in Christ.

  St. Kyrillos was a monk from Thessaloniki who confessed Christ before the Ottoman authorities. Tradition relates that he was burned alive in Thessaloniki in the sixteenth century.
