  Justin the Philosopher

  Martyr, Ιουστίνος

  St. Justin the Philosopher and Martyr was born in Palestine and lived in the second century. Seeking truth through the schools of the philosophers, he found it at last in Christ, and thereafter wore the philosopher's cloak in the service of the Gospel. In Rome he wrote his celebrated Apologies, defending the Christians before the emperors and describing the baptism and Eucharist of the early Church.

• Chariton, Charito and Companions, Martyrs with Justin

  Martyr, Χαρίτων και Χαριτώ

  The companions of Saint Justin the Philosopher were arrested with him in Rome under the prefect Rusticus during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Among them was the virgin Charito and the layman Chariton, together with Evelpistus, Hierax, Paeon, Liberian and a second Justus.

• Thespesios the Martyr

  Martyr, Θεσπέσιος

  Saint Thespesios was a Christian of Cappadocia who confessed Christ before the governor during the reign of Alexander Severus in the third century. Tradition relates that he was subjected to various tortures and finally beheaded, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

• Justin Popovich of Chelije

  Venerable, Ιουστίνος Πόποβιτς

  Saint Justin Popovich (1894-1979) was a Serbian priest-monk, professor of dogmatic theology and one of the great Orthodox theologians of the twentieth century. Removed from the university by the communist authorities, he spent his last decades confined to the women's monastery of Chelije near Valjevo, where he wrote his multi-volume Lives of the Saints and many theological works.

• Dionysius of Glushitsa

  Venerable, Διονύσιος του Γλουσέτσκ

  Saint Dionysius of Glushitsa was a fifteenth-century Russian monastic who founded several monasteries in the forests of Vologda, in the region known as the Northern Thebaid. He was renowned as a strict ascetic, a painter of icons and a father to many disciples, and he reposed in 1437.

• Agapitus of the Kiev Caves

  Venerable, Αγαπητός ο Ανάργυρος

  Saint Agapitus was a monk of the Kiev Caves Lavra in the eleventh century, a disciple of Saint Anthony of Kiev. He tended the sick of the monastery and of the city with prayer and humble remedies, asking no payment, and so received the title of Unmercenary Physician.

• Pyrrhus the Virgin, Bishop

  Hierarch, Πύρρος

  Saint Pyrrhus is remembered in the synaxaria as a bishop who preserved virginity throughout his life and shepherded his flock in holiness. Little else of his life has been preserved, and he is honoured simply as a saintly hierarch who reposed in peace.
