  Abdias the Prophet

  Prophet, Αβδίας

  The holy prophet Abdias, called Obadiah in the Hebrew Scriptures, is one of the twelve minor prophets, and his book is the shortest in the Old Testament. In it he pronounces the judgment of God upon Edom for its pride and its violence against Israel, and he foretells the day of the Lord and the deliverance that shall be upon Mount Zion.

• Barlaam of Caesarea

  Martyr, Βαρλαάμ ο Μάρτυς

  Saint Barlaam was an elderly Christian of Caesarea in Cappadocia during the persecution of Diocletian. Tradition relates that the governor placed burning coals and incense on his open palm over a pagan altar, hoping he would drop them and appear to sacrifice.

• Heliodoros of Magydos

  Martyr, Ηλιόδωρος

  Saint Heliodoros was a Christian of Magydos in Pamphylia during the reign of Aurelian. Arrested for his faith, he was subjected to many tortures, which tradition relates he bore with such courage that some of his torturers believed.

• Azes and the 150 soldiers

  Martyr, Άζης ο Θαυματουργός

  Saint Azes was a soldier of Isauria during the persecution of Diocletian who left the army to live in prayer and was known for working miracles. Arrested and brought to the governor, he was tortured for his faith.

• Anthimos, Thallelaios, Christopher and Euphemia

  Martyr, Άνθιμος, Θαλλέλαιος, Χριστόφορος και Ευφημία

  The holy martyrs Anthimos, Thallelaios, Christopher and Euphemia with her children, and Pancharios, are commemorated together in the synaxarion. Tradition records that they suffered for Christ by the sword.

• Hilarion the Iberian

  Venerable, Ιλαρίων ο Ίβηρ

  Saint Hilarion was born in Georgia in the ninth century and became a monk at an early age. He travelled to the Holy Land, Mount Olympus in Bithynia, Rome and Constantinople, living in prayer and working miracles.

• Philaret of Moscow

  Hierarch, Φιλάρετος Μόσχας

  Saint Philaret Drozdov was Metropolitan of Moscow for nearly half a century in the nineteenth century. A theologian and preacher of great learning, he composed the Catechism used throughout the Russian Church and oversaw the translation of the Bible into Russian.
