Akakios of the Ladder

Venerable Akakios of Sinai, the obedient disciple praised in the Ladder of Divine Ascent.

Saint Akakios was a young monk of Sinai who served a harsh elder with perfect obedience and patience, bearing daily abuse for nine years without complaint. Saint John Climacus tells his story in the Ladder of Divine Ascent.

After his death, when the elder was asked whether Akakios was truly dead, a voice from the tomb answered that one who practises obedience cannot die.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Akakios of the Ladder is commemorated on November 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 9 of the civil calendar.
