George of Chios

Holy New Martyr George of Chios, martyred at Kydonies in 1807.

Saint George was born on Chios and as a child was taken by Ottomans and raised as a Muslim, but returned to the Christian faith as a young man. Working at Kydonies in Asia Minor, he was recognized and denounced.

Refusing to deny Christ, he was hanged in 1807. His memory is kept on Chios and at Kydonies.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, George of Chios is commemorated on November 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 9 of the civil calendar.
