James the Solitary

Venerable James the Anchorite of Syria.

Venerable James lived as a hermit near Cyrrhus in Syria in the fifth century, in the open air without shelter, enduring heat and cold. Theodoret of Cyrrhus, who knew him, records his severe asceticism and his miracles.

He reposed in peace at an advanced age.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, James the Solitary is commemorated on November 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 9 of the civil calendar.
