Nikon Metanoeite

Venerable Nikon the Preacher of Repentance, apostle of Crete and the Peloponnese.

Saint Nikon was born in Pontus in the tenth century and became a monk. He travelled through Asia Minor, Crete after its recovery from the Arabs, and the Peloponnese, preaching everywhere the single word Metanoeite, Repent, from which he took his name.

He settled at Sparta, where he built a church and reposed in peace around 998. He is the patron saint of Sparta.

On the New Calendar, Nikon Metanoeite is commemorated on November 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 9 of the civil calendar.
