Alypios Stylites

Venerable Alypios Stylites.

Venerable Alypios the Stylite was an ascetic of Paphlagonia in Asia Minor who embraced the rare and severe discipline of the pillar saints, standing upon a column in unceasing prayer, exposed to heat and frost, for many decades. From his pillar he taught and consoled the many who came to him, and monastic communities gathered nearby under his care.

He reposed in extreme old age, having endured his ascetic struggle to the end even when his body failed. He is commemorated on November 26.

On the New Calendar, Alypios Stylites is commemorated on November 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 9 of the civil calendar.
