Anthimos the New of Kefalonia

Venerable Anthimos the New, the blind ascetic of Kefalonia.

St. Anthimos the New was born on Kefalonia in the eighteenth century and lost his sight in youth. He embraced the monastic life and, though blind, traveled through the islands of the Aegean and the Ionian Sea preaching, founding monasteries and strengthening the faithful under Ottoman and Venetian rule.

He reposed in peace in 1781 and is commemorated on September 4.

On the New Calendar, Anthimos the New of Kefalonia is commemorated on September 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 17 of the civil calendar.
