Moses the Prophet and God-seer

Holy Prophet Moses the God-seer, who led Israel out of Egypt and received the Law on Sinai.

The holy Prophet Moses, of the tribe of Levi, was saved from the Nile as an infant and raised in the house of Pharaoh. Called by God from the burning bush, he led the people of Israel out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, and for forty years in the wilderness, and received the Law on Mount Sinai, where he spoke with God face to face.

He died on Mount Nebo within sight of the Promised Land. The Church honors him as the greatest of the prophets of the Law and, with Elijah, a witness of the Transfiguration. His memory is kept on September 4.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Moses the Prophet and God-seer is commemorated on September 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 17 of the civil calendar.
