Babylas of Nicomedia and the 84 Children

Holy Martyr Babylas, teacher of Nicomedia, and his 84 young pupils.

St. Babylas was a Christian teacher in Nicomedia who instructed children in letters and in the faith. Denounced during the persecution of Maximian, he was brought before the governor with eighty-four of his young pupils, who refused with him to deny Christ.

After torments the teacher was beheaded, and the children were put to death after him. They are commemorated together on September 4.

On the New Calendar, Babylas of Nicomedia and the 84 Children is commemorated on September 4. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 17 of the civil calendar.
