Anthony of the Kiev Caves

Venerable Anthony of the Kiev Far Caves, founder of monasticism in Rus′ (†1073).

St. Anthony of the Kiev Caves is honored as the father of monasticism in the lands of Rus. Born at Lyubech, he received the monastic tonsure on Mount Athos, and returning north he settled in a cave above the Dnieper River near Kiev, where his holiness drew disciples and the great Monastery of the Caves took root.

With his disciple St. Theodosius he set the pattern of monastic life that shaped the piety of Rus for centuries. He reposed in 1073 and is commemorated on July 10.

On the New Calendar, Anthony of the Kiev Caves is commemorated on July 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 23 of the civil calendar.
