Ten Thousand Fathers of Nitria

The Holy Ten Thousand Fathers martyred in the desert of Nitria.

The Ten Thousand Fathers were monks of the Egyptian desert who were slain in the time of Patriarch Theophilos of Alexandria, who had them accused of Origenism. Tradition relates that they were killed by fire and sword in their monasteries.

They are commemorated as a company of holy ascetics who suffered unjustly.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Ten Thousand Fathers of Nitria is commemorated on July 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 23 of the civil calendar.
