  Anthony of the Kiev Caves

  Venerable, Αντώνιος

  St. Anthony of the Kiev Caves is honored as the father of monasticism in the lands of Rus. Born at Lyubech, he received the monastic tonsure on Mount Athos, and returning north he settled in a cave above the Dnieper River near Kiev, where his holiness drew disciples and the great Monastery of the Caves took root.

  Forty-Five Holy Martyrs of Nicopolis

  Martyr, Μάρτυρες

  The Forty-Five Holy Martyrs of Nicopolis in Armenia confessed Christ during the persecution of the Emperor Licinius, around the year 319. Presenting themselves openly as Christians, they were imprisoned and endured harsh sufferings, encouraging one another in prayer and psalmody, and were finally put to death by fire.

  In the Greek Orthodox tradition, those who bear the name Amalia keep their name day on July 10, together with the commemoration of the Forty-Five Holy Martyrs of Nicopolis.   St. Apollonios was a Christian of Sardis in Lydia who refused to swear by the fortune of the emperor. Brought before the governor at Iconium, he confessed Christ openly.

• Ten Thousand Fathers of Nitria

  Martyr, Μύριοι Πατέρες

  The Ten Thousand Fathers were monks of the Egyptian desert who were slain in the time of Patriarch Theophilos of Alexandria, who had them accused of Origenism. Tradition relates that they were killed by fire and sword in their monasteries.

• Parthenios and Eumenios of Koudoumas

  Venerable, Παρθένιος και Ευμένιος

  Sts. Parthenios and Eumenios were brothers from Pigaidakia in Crete who lived as ascetics and refounded the Monastery of Koudoumas on the southern coast of the island. They lived in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

  On this day the Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos commemorates together all the saints who lived and labored within its walls: founders, ascetics, hierarchs and martyrs.
