  Euphemia the All-Praised

  Martyr, Ευφημία η Μεγαλομάρτυς

  St. Euphemia the All-Praised was a virgin martyr of Chalcedon who suffered for Christ during the persecutions at the turn of the fourth century, enduring torture and death rather than sacrifice to idols. Her principal feast is kept on September 16.

• Olga of Kiev

  Apostle, Όλγα

  St. Olga was the wife of Prince Igor of Kiev and ruled Rus' after his death in the tenth century. She traveled to Constantinople, where she was baptized with the name Helen, and returned to Kiev as the first Christian ruler of her people.

• Sophrony of Essex

  Venerable, Σωφρόνιος του Έσσεξ

  St. Sophrony (Sakharov) was born in Moscow in 1896 and became a monk on Mount Athos, where he was the disciple of St. Silouan the Athonite. He later founded the Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Essex, England.

• Nektarios of Vryoulla

  Martyr, Νεκτάριος ο Νέος

  St. Nektarios was born in Vryoulla in Asia Minor and, having been drawn into apostasy in his youth, repented and became a monk in the Skete of St. Anne on Mount Athos. Tradition relates that he returned to his homeland to confess Christ openly.

• Nikodemos of Elbasan

  Martyr, Νικόδημος ο εξ Ελβασάν

  St. Nikodemos was from Elbasan in Albania and had fallen into apostasy. Tradition relates that he repented on Mount Athos, became a monk, and returned to confess Christ before those who had known him.

• Kindeos the Presbyter

  Hierarch, Κινδέος ο Πρεσβύτερος

  St. Kindeos was a priest in Pamphylia during the persecution of Diocletian. Denounced as a Christian, he was condemned to be burned.

• Nikodemos of Vatopedi

  Venerable, Νικόδημος ο Βατοπεδινός

  St. Nikodemos was an ascetic of Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos in the fourteenth century. He is remembered as the elder who received the young Gregory Palamas and guided him in the life of prayer.
