Sophrony of Essex

Venerable Sophrony (Sakharov) of Essex, disciple of St. Silouan the Athonite.

St. Sophrony (Sakharov) was born in Moscow in 1896 and became a monk on Mount Athos, where he was the disciple of St. Silouan the Athonite. He later founded the Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Essex, England.

He reposed in 1993 and was glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2019. His writings on prayer and the person of Christ are read throughout the Orthodox world.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Sophrony of Essex is commemorated on July 11. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 24 of the civil calendar.
