Venerable Athanasios, founder of the Great Meteoron monastery on the rocks of Thessaly.
Athanasios was born in Hypate in the fourteenth century and became a monk on Mount Athos. Fleeing pirate raids, he came to the rocks of Meteora in Thessaly, where he climbed the great pillar of stone and founded the Monastery of the Transfiguration, the Great Meteoron.
He gave his community its rule and reposed in peace, having established one of the great monastic centres of Greece.
