Venerable Brigid of Kildare, abbess and enlightener of Ireland.
St. Brigid was born in Ireland in the fifth century and from childhood was known for her generosity to the poor. She received the monastic veil and founded the great monastery of Kildare, which became a centre of learning and charity.
Honoured as the Mary of the Gael, she is counted with Patrick and Columba among the three patrons of Ireland and is venerated as a pre-schism saint of the undivided Church.
