Daniel of Katounakia

Venerable Daniel of Katounakia, Athonite elder and founder of the Danielaioi brotherhood.

St. Daniel of Katounakia was born in Smyrna in 1846 and came to Mount Athos as a young man, living for years at the monastery of St. Panteleimon and later in the desert of Katounakia, where he founded the brotherhood of the Danielaioi. He was a learned spiritual father, iconographer and writer, consulted by elders across the Holy Mountain and by St. Nektarios of Aegina.

He reposed in 1929 and was glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2020. He is commemorated on September 7.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Daniel of Katounakia is commemorated on September 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 20 of the civil calendar.
