John of Novgorod

St. John the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Novgorod.

St. John was Archbishop of Novgorod in the twelfth century, a man of prayer and a defender of his city. Tradition relates that during a siege of Novgorod he carried the icon of the Mother of God of the Sign onto the walls and the enemy was turned back, and that he was slandered and vindicated by a miracle on the river Volkhov.

He reposed in 1186 and is commemorated on September 7.

On the New Calendar, John of Novgorod is commemorated on September 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 20 of the civil calendar.
