Kassiani the Hymnographer

Venerable Kassiani the Hymnographer, nun of Constantinople and author of the Hymn of Kassiani.

St. Kassiani was a noblewoman of Constantinople in the ninth century, learned and pious. Tradition relates that she was among the maidens presented to the emperor Theophilos as a prospective bride and that her bold reply cost her the crown; she embraced the monastic life instead and founded a convent in the city.

She is the most celebrated woman hymnographer of the Church, and her troparion on the sinful woman who anointed the Lord is sung on Holy Tuesday evening. She is commemorated on September 7.

On the New Calendar, Kassiani the Hymnographer is commemorated on September 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 20 of the civil calendar.
