Demos the Fisherman

Holy New Martyr Demos the Fisherman of Adrianople, martyred at Smyrna.

Demos was a fisherman from Adrianople who worked in Smyrna. Tradition relates that a Turkish employer, angered by a dispute, accused him falsely of having promised to embrace Islam.

Brought before the judge, he confessed Christ and refused every inducement, and was beheaded at Smyrna in the eighteenth century.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Demos the Fisherman is commemorated on April 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 23 of the civil calendar.
