  Terence

  Martyr, Τερέντιος

  St. Terence was a martyr of North Africa who suffered in the third century, during the persecution of the emperor Decius. Together with a company of fellow Christians, he confessed Christ before the proconsul, endured imprisonment and torments without wavering, and was beheaded with his companions.

• Gregory V of Constantinople

  Hierarch, Γρηγόριος Ε' ο Εθνομάρτυς

  Gregory was born in Dimitsana in the Peloponnese in the eighteenth century and rose to become Metropolitan of Smyrna and three times Ecumenical Patriarch. He was known for his austerity, his charity, and his care for the education of his people.

• Huldah the Prophetess

  Prophet, Ολδά η Προφήτις

  Huldah was a prophetess in Jerusalem in the reign of King Josiah. When the Book of the Law was found in the Temple, the king sent to her, and she declared the word of the Lord concerning the coming judgment on Judah and the peace granted to Josiah for his humility.

  James, a priest, and Azas, a deacon, were arrested in Persia during the persecution of King Shapur in the fourth century. They endured severe torture for refusing to worship the sun.

• Demos the Fisherman

  Martyr, Δήμος ο Αλιεύς

  Demos was a fisherman from Adrianople who worked in Smyrna. Tradition relates that a Turkish employer, angered by a dispute, accused him falsely of having promised to embrace Islam.

• Chrysanthos of Xenophontos

  Martyr, Χρύσανθος ο Ξενοφωντινός

  Chrysanthos was a monk of the Monastery of Xenophontos on Mount Athos. Tradition relates that he went to Constantinople and there openly confessed Christ before the Ottoman authorities.

• Miltiades of Rome

  Hierarch, Μιλτιάδης Πάπας Ρώμης

  Miltiades was Bishop of Rome in the early fourth century, in the years when the persecutions ended and the emperor Constantine granted freedom to the Church. He presided over a synod at Rome that examined the Donatist dispute in Africa.
