Hieromartyr Gregory V, Patriarch of Constantinople, hanged at the gate of the Patriarchate in 1821.
Gregory was born in Dimitsana in the Peloponnese in the eighteenth century and rose to become Metropolitan of Smyrna and three times Ecumenical Patriarch. He was known for his austerity, his charity, and his care for the education of his people.
When the Greek revolution broke out in 1821, the Ottomans seized him on Easter Sunday and hanged him from the gate of the Patriarchate, which has remained shut ever since. His relics rest in the Cathedral of Athens.
