Dorotheos of Gaza

Venerable Dorotheos of Gaza, abbot and spiritual teacher.

Saint Dorotheos was a monk of the monastery of Abba Seridos near Gaza in the sixth century and a disciple of the great elders Barsanuphios and John. He later founded his own monastery and wrote instructions on the spiritual life that remain among the most read works of Orthodox monasticism.

His teaching stresses humility, obedience and the cutting off of self-will.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Dorotheos of Gaza is commemorated on August 13. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 26 of the civil calendar.
